Competencies & Requirements

We seek dedicated, hardworking applicants who are willing to serve both the students and the community. While you do not need teaching experience, you must be ready to commit to students who will see you as a tutor, as a teacher, as a mentor and as a dependable presence in their lives.

  • Communicate with coach, school liaison, and Reading
  • Assist staff in a timely and professional manner.
  • Maintain records as required including student attendance, student data and AmeriCorps hours.
  • Become an integral member of the school community.
  • Be willing to work with children who may have behavioral challenges in addition to academic needs.
  • Demonstrate resilience, adaptability and professionalism.
  • Be open to constructive feedback.
  • Become an integral member of the AmeriCorps Community and participating in all AmeriCorps trainings, events, and projects.

You must commit to one of the following terms of service to which you're applying.

  • August 2021-June 2022: Serve a minimum 10 months from August 2021-June 2022. Full-time Reading Assist Fellows are expected to serve in their schools from approximately 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m., Monday-Friday. Half-time Reading Assist Fellows are expected to serve in schools from either 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. or 11:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m.

Reading Assist Fellows receive a modest living allowance:

- Full time members: $1500/month, pretax - Half time members: $1000/month, pretax

Please Note: Though you may serve up to four terms with AmeriCorps, you may not be eligible for the Education Award for all four terms.

If you have a previous criminal conviction or criminal adjudication, it does not necessarily disqualify you from consideration, depending on the circumstances. However, intentional misrepresentation or omission of criminal history is grounds for disqualification.

Education

Professional/Service Experience

Please include any professional and/or volunteer experiences that contributed to your skill set, such as: - Full or part-time paid jobs or volunteer roles - Leadership positions in clubs or organizations - AmeriCorps or other service positions - Self-employment, internships/fellowships, full-time parenting

Reading Assist recommends against full-time employment and that fellows enroll in no more than one or two college classes during their service term. The time required for those outside commitments will negatively affect a fellow's ability to participate in required after-school training sessions and meetings, as well as self-care.
