Our Difference

Reading Intervention Success

Reading Assist assesses early literacy and grade-level reading skills for students three times per year. We see positive results within four months of reading intervention, and more than 90% of our students reach benchmarks by the end of the school year. Our students also regularly outpace expected grade-level progress in oral reading fluency.

Foundational Reading Assessments Include:

First Sound Fluency (FSF)
Phoneme Segmentation Fluency (PSF)
Nonsense Word Fluency – Correct Letter Sounds (NWF-CLS)
Nonsense Word Fluency – Whole Words Read (NWF-WWR)
Oral Reading Fluency – Accuracy (ORF Acc)
Oral Reading Fluency – Words Correct Per Minute (ORF WCPM)

How We Assess Students

Reading Assist uses Acadience (also known as DIBELS Next) to assess early literacy and reading skills for students. Benchmark testing is administered at grade level three times per year by an independent evaluator.

In a comparative study, Reading Assist students outperformed other students receiving other interventions.

“Every single one of our students in Reading Assist has demonstrated growth – and in some cases significant growth. These are the students who were the 12 lowest scoring students in the school who had not previously been progressing at all. It’s so important to look at the growth data.  Historically, these students could feel very beaten down, but when you look at their growth, you are looking at closing the gap.”

“We have a really struggling population. We are working with over 90% students on free and reduced lunch and over 90% minority students. When I heard that Reading Assist had a new model for the most struggling readers, I knew we needed to have them in our school. We have 18 students in Reading Assist now. I wish we could have 100 students in the program.”
